About us

The Studio of Korean Karate has been instructing people in the art of Tae Kwon Do for over 35 years.

We teach the Chung Do Kwan style of traditional Tae Kwon Do. In recent years the martial arts have seen a dumbing down, from an art, into a sport. Tae Kwon Do has perhaps seen this trend more strongly in recent years than many other martial arts - Tae Kwon Do sparring is now even an olympic event! There are many competition style schools around, perhaps even in your area, but the number of schools that teach a traditional form of Korean martial arts is dwindling. For more information on tradtional versus competition style martial arts please see Instructor Ian Fennell's black belt paper: Art vs. Sport.

Studio of Korean Karate - Our History

The Studio of Korean Karate, Inc. is dedicated to quality instruction, with an emphasis on individualized instruction tailored to the needs of each student. We pride ourselves on our friendly, family-oriented classes. The Studio of Korean Karate started over 35 years ago. Its founder Sensei Neil McVoy was the head instructor at the Jhoon Ree institute in Vienna, VA and Hyattsville, MD. The Studio of Korean Karate molds a unique blend of traditional Oriental philosophy and techniques with modern innovations and applications. Students cultivate confidence, respect, and sportsmanship that will last a lifetime.  Neil currently lives in Tennessee.

Since its inception our school has tried to remain true to the tradition of martial arts. We believe strongly in the five major principles of Tae Kwon Do

Courtesy,
Integrity,
Perseverance,
Indomitable Spirit,
Self Control.

Since the school started we have also added a small amount of hapkido joint locks and take downs into our curriculum.
